What Happened?
The Planet Home Lending data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Planet Home Lendings’ filing with the Attorney General of Maine provides some important information on what led up to the breach.
According to this source, on November 15, 2023, Planet Home Lending became aware of a ransomware attack targeting the company’s IT network. In response, Planet Home Lending contained the incident, terminated all unauthorized access, and then began working with third-party data security specialists to assist with its investigation.
On November 28, 2023, Planet Home Lending determined that the ransomware group, known as Lockbit, was able to access a folder containing the loan information of certain Planet Home Lending customers. Evidently, the incident involved a vulnerability in software used by Planet Home Lending and created by Citrix Systems, Inc known as “Citrix Bleed“.
What Information Was Obtained By The Hackers?
After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Planet Home Lending reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. According to the breach notification, the investigation revealed that data obtained by the hackers include:

- address,
- Social Insurance number,
- loan number,
- financial account number.
On January 24, 2024, Planet Home Lending began sending notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the breach.
