BerryDunn Data Breach Exposes 1.1 Million People To Identity Theft Featured

Lawsuit alleges BerryDunn failed to protect sensitive data by not implementing reasonable data security safeguards in compliance with federal and state laws.

A class action lawsuit was recently filed against accounting an consulting firm Berry Dunn McNeil & Parker LLC (“BerryDunn”) alleging negligence after it was revealed that it failed to protect the personal information of 1.1 million people at a third party vendor used to manage BerryDunn’s Health Analytics Prace Group (“HAPG”).

What Happened?

According to a Notice of Data Breach posted by the Office of the Maine Attorney General, on September 14, 2023, BerryDunn learned that Reliable Networks of Maine, LLC (“Reliable), a third-party service provider, had fallen victim to a cyberattack. During the data security incident, a hacker stole the personally identifiable information of individuals involved in BerryDunn’s HAPG that was stored on Reliable’s computer network. Subsequently, BerryDunn conducted an investigation, where it discovered that the data breach occurred between September 12, 2023, and September 14, 2023.

What Information Was Stolen?

The compromised information includes –

  • names,
  • addresses,
  • driver’s license numbers, and
  • non-driver identification card numbers.

What Is BerryDunn Doing To Protect My Identity?

According to the information contained in the Notice of Data Security Incident being mailed to affected individuals, BerryDunn has taken steps to secure the HAPG data including decommissioning all Berry Dunn systems under Reliable’s control and migrating all HAPG data to secure internal Berry Dunn systems that are continually monitored.

BerryDunn is offering identity theft and credit protection services for those individuals affected by the breach for a period of 12 months.
