Medical Management Resources Group Data Breach Exposes 2.35 Million Patients To Identity Theft Featured

Medical Management Resource Group, doing business as American Vision Partners recently confirmed that the protected health information of 2,350,236 individuals was compromised in a recent data breach.

Medical Management Resource Group, L.L.C. (“MMRG” or the “Company”, d.b.a. American Vision Partners, which provides administrative services to ophthalmology practices, recently filed notice of a data breach affecting information the Company maintains in connection with performing services for such practices.

What Happened?

Little is known about the breach. According to a notification given to the Health and Homeland Security Office for Civil Rights, MMRG detected unauthorized activity within its network on November 14, 2023. Upon learning of this incident, MMRG promptly took steps to contain it, including isolating impacted systems. The Company also launched an investigation with the assistance of leading third-party cybersecurity firms and coordinated with law enforcement.

What Information Was Obtained By The Hackers?

On or around December 6, 2023, MMRG determined that, in connection with the incident the Company detected on November 14, 2023, the unauthorized party obtained personal information associated with patients of the relevant practices. The information for affected patients varied and may have included

  • Social Security Number
  • Date of Birth
  • Contact Information
  • Medical Information (such as services received)
  • Health Insurance Information (such as clinical information and medications)

What is MMRG Doing To Protect My Identity?

MMRG is in the process of notifying patients whose information may have been affected by this incident. As part of the notification process, MMRG has recommended certain steps individuals can take to help protect their information, such as monitoring their credit reports and reviewing their account statements.

MMRG also has arranged to offer credit monitoring and identity protection services to qualified individuals for two years at no cost to them. Individuals who receive a notification from MMRG about this issue should refer to that notice for additional information.
