Frontier Communications Data Breach Exposes 750k Customers To Identity Theft Featured
Lawsuits claim Frontier’s negligence in safeguarding its computer systems and data are the reason 750k customers are at permanent risk of identity theft.
Numerous class action lawsuits were recently filed in the wake of Frontier Communications (Frontier) filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it’s systems were breached in an April cyberattack and that certain systems were shut down as a result of the attack.
In a quarterly report filed with the SEC in May, the Dallas-based Telecoms giant reiterated that the attackers likely stole certain data from its systems, including personal information.
According to an June 4, 2024 article in Security Week, the criminal ransomware group known as RansomHub claimed responsibility for the attack and threaten to release the information on all the customers unless Frontier pays a ransom by June 14, 2014.
Frontier has apparently ignored the ransom request and RansomHub have begun leaking data and offering it for sale on the dark web according to an article appearing on its blog site.
What Happened?
According to the Notice of Data Breach posted on the Attorney General of Maine’s website, on April 14, 2024, Frontier detected unauthorized access to some of it’s internal IT systems. It immediately isolated these systems, contacted law enforcement and launched an investigation.
What Personal Information Was Stolen?
On June 6, 2024 Frontier acknowledged that 751,895 customers were affected by the breach and that it had begun the process of notifying them. To date, Frontier has not pubically divulged the extent of information stolen only that information acquired includes Name or other personal identifier in combination with Social Insurance number.
RansomHub was more forthcoming stating that the information stolen during the breach includes –
- name
- address
- dates of birth
- Social Insurance number
- credit score.
Moreover, RansomHub claims that it has data on more than 2 million Frontier customers.
What is Frontier Doing To Protect My Identity?
According to the Notice of Data Breach letter, Frontier is offering one year of complimentary credit monitoring services to customers affected by the breach.
