Nissan North America Data Breach Exposes 53K Employees To Identity Theft Featured

Nissan tight-lipped about how hackers were able to penetrate it’s systems and steal the identities of over 53K past and present employees.

A class action lawsuit was recently filed against Nissan North America (NNA), on behalf of current and former employees, after NNA revealed it fell victim to a data breach that resulted in the theft of personal identifying information (PII) belonging to 53,038 current and former employees.

What Happened?

According to the Notice of Data Breach, on November 7, 2023, NNA learned it had fallen victim to a targeted cyberattack on its external VPN, orchestrated by a criminal threat actor who shut down specific NNA systems and demanded a ransom. This incident not only disrupted operations but also raised significant concerns regarding the safety and privacy of employee information.

At a Town Hall meeting held on December 5, 2023, NNA informed all current employees about the incident, acknowledging the potential risk that personal information could have been accessed. The company committed to notifying impacted individuals as their investigation progressed.

What Information Was Stolen?

Following a forensic review, NNA determined that while the accessed data primarily consisted of business information, personal information of current and former employees had also been compromised. This crucial discovery came to light on or about February 28, 2024. The compromised personal information includes –

  • Name
  • Address
  • Social Security number
  • Other personal information

What is Nissan Doing To Protect My Identity?

NNA announced it has made further enhancements to it’s systems, security, and practices. It has also engaged appropriate cybersecurity experts to assist it in conducting a review of it’s security practices and systems to ensure that enhanced security protocols are in place going forward to reduce the risk of this type of incident occurring in the future.

Nissan also announced that It is offering affected individuals complimentary two years (24 months) credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
